*The remains of St Peter Claver rest under the main altar of this church. For forty years he attended to the many slaves who arrived in the city upon slave ships. Through his ministry he would offer at least a glimmer of hope and love before they were carted off to the auction blocks. It is estimated that during his life he baptized over 300,000 of these individuals.
